Why Your Contractor Website Isn't Generating Leads

You spent money on a website. It looks sharp. Logo's up there, phone number's listed, got some project photos. But the phone's not ringing.

Join the club. Most contractor websites are glorified brochures. They look fine and do absolutely nothing. Here's what's probably wrong — and what to fix first.

1. Google Can't Find You

Having a website and ranking on Google are two different things. If nobody sees your site when they search "roof repair near me" or "plumber in [your city]," it's not working for you.

Why this happens:

  • No keyword research when the site was built
  • One generic "Services" page instead of pages for each service
  • No location pages for the cities you actually work in
  • Duplicate or missing title tags

Fix it: Build a dedicated page for each service and each city. "Roof replacement in Orlando" ranks. "Services" doesn't.

2. Your Site Is Slow

If your site takes more than 3 seconds to load, over half your visitors bounce before they see a single word. Google penalizes slow sites in rankings too.

Why this happens:

  • Uploading 4000px photos straight from your phone
  • Cheap shared hosting
  • WordPress loaded with 20 plugins
  • No caching or CDN

3. It's Not Built for Phones

Over 70% of your traffic is mobile. The homeowner whose pipe burst at 10 PM isn't sitting at a desk — they're on their phone looking for help. If your site's a pain to use on mobile, they're calling someone else.

Fix it: Pull out your phone right now and test your own site. Can you tap the number to call? Read the text without zooming? Fill out the form? If any answer is no, that's costing you leads every day.

4. No Clear Next Step

Too many contractor sites bury the phone number in the footer or hide the contact form on a separate page. Every single page should make it dead simple to reach you.

What actually works:

  • Clickable phone number in the header on every page
  • "Get a Free Estimate" button visible without scrolling
  • Contact forms on service pages, not just the contact page
  • A sticky call bar on mobile that follows the visitor down the page

5. Zero Social Proof

Hiring a contractor is a trust decision. A homeowner is letting a stranger into their house to do expensive work. Your site has to answer one question fast: "Can I trust these guys?"

Put this front and center:

  • Your Google review count and star rating
  • Real testimonials with names and cities
  • Before-and-after photos of actual jobs
  • License, insurance, and certification badges
  • Years in business and total projects completed

6. AI Search Doesn't Know You Exist

This one's newer but growing fast. ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, and Perplexity now answer the questions that used to drive people to click on websites. If your content isn't structured with clear headings, direct answers, and schema markup, you're invisible to a whole new channel of potential customers.

Where to Start

Don't try to tackle all six at once. Here's the order that gets the fastest results:

  1. Speed and mobile — fix the foundation
  2. Service and location pages — give Google something to rank
  3. Calls to action — make it effortless to contact you
  4. Social proof — earn trust before they even call
  5. AI optimization — get ahead of where search is headed

Here's the good news: most of your competitors haven't fixed these problems either. Knock out two or three and you're already ahead of the pack in your market.
